Do I need to register SortScape with ACMA's Sender ID register?
Last updated:
From 1 July 2026, Australian rules require businesses to register alphanumeric SMS sender names (where the sender appears as a business name instead of a phone number) with the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA). The goal is to make it harder for scammers to impersonate legitimate organisations such as Australia Post or the ATO.
You do not need to register anything for SMS sent through SortScape.
SortScape sends text messages from a regular phone number, not from a branded sender name like your business name. Because of that, the 1 July Sender ID changes do not apply to SMS sent through SortScape.
Why is SortScape not in the ACMA register?
Section titled “Why is SortScape not in the ACMA register?”You may see other software providers listed in the ACMA Sender ID register. That usually means they send SMS using an alphanumeric sender name (for example, where the sender shows as the provider’s business name instead of a phone number).
SortScape does not send SMS that way. Our messages come from a regular phone number assigned by our SMS provider, so there is nothing for SortScape to register and nothing for you to look up in the ACMA register.
Will my messages be blocked or marked as spam?
Section titled “Will my messages be blocked or marked as spam?”No. These rule changes apply to alphanumeric sender names only. Because SortScape sends from a regular phone number, your messages will continue to be delivered the same way they are today. They should not appear as “unverified” or be blocked because you did not register a sender ID.
This applies to all customers, including anyone you add after 1 July 2026. There is no extra registration step on your side.
What will customers see?
Section titled “What will customers see?”Your customers receive a normal text message thread. The sender is a phone number (not your business name or your personal mobile). SortScape keeps the same sender number for each customer so replies stay in one thread.
For example:
From: 04XX XXX XXX
Hi Sue, we’ll be at 18 Banner Road on Friday. Please call me on 0412 345 678 if needed. - Sharon
Your business name and callback number can appear inside the message text (for example using the user_mobile template tag), but the sender itself is not branded. See Can I send text messages from my own number? for how callback numbers work.
Any replies to those messages are captured and sent to you by email so you can respond from within SortScape.
