Why is my Xero invoice failing to create when a contact has multiple email addresses?
Last updated:
If you’re using Xero and have entered multiple email addresses for a contact (separated by commas), you may see an error like:
“Failed to create contact in Xero: Email address must be valid.”
Why this happens
Section titled “Why this happens”SortScape allows multiple email addresses per contact (comma-separated).
However, Xero only supports a single email address per contact.
When you create an invoice in SortScape with Xero connected:
- SortScape first attempts to create or sync the contact in Xero
- If the contact has multiple email addresses, Xero rejects it
- Because the contact fails to create, the invoice is never created in Xero
This is a known limitation in Xero:

How to fix it
Section titled “How to fix it”To successfully create the invoice in Xero:
Ensure the contact has only one email address
- Edit the contact in SortScape
- Remove any additional comma-separated email addresses
