Why did I get an email about Stripe updating its terms?

Last updated:

The email is genuine. If you take online payments through SortScape (the Pay Now button on invoices), your payments run through a Stripe account that SortScape set up for you. When Stripe changes its legal terms, it asks us to pass the news on, because these accounts don’t have their own full Stripe Dashboard to receive Stripe’s notices.

No. You don’t need to sign or accept anything. If you keep taking online payments after the date in the email, you’re agreeing to Stripe’s updated terms.

You can read the current terms in Stripe’s Connected Account Agreement, which includes the Stripe Services Agreement.

What if I don’t want to accept the new terms?

Section titled “What if I don’t want to accept the new terms?”

Reply to the email (or message us from the chat in SortScape) before the date the terms take effect, and we’ll close your Stripe account. A person on our team handles this, so allow a business day or two.

Once your Stripe account is closed, the Pay Now button stops working and your customers can no longer pay invoices online. They can still pay you by bank transfer, cash or any other method you accept, and you can keep recording those payments in SortScape.

Why did I get it when I don’t use online payments?

Section titled “Why did I get it when I don’t use online payments?”

You get the email if you started the online payments setup at any point, even if you never finished it or never took a payment. Stripe still treats the account as open. If you don’t plan to use online payments, you can ignore the email, or reply and ask us to close the Stripe account.
